The Khephren Workshop

Traditional Craftsmanship

Thanks to the ancestral expertise of its artisans, the Khephren Workshop puts its traditional skills at the service of its clients and works daily to deliver quality work on all the projects entrusted to it.

Depending on your needs, bronzes can be crafted using 3 foundry techniques:

  • Sand casting: The most common traditional casting method for our bronzes. The bronzes are deburred, blanched, then polished manually.
  • Lost wax casting: Creation of a wax mold for casting with a perfect finish. The bronzes are polished manually.
  • Injection casting: Casting method for series production offering a better quality-to-price ratio. These pieces are made of brass and barrel polished.

Once the bronze is crafted in the foundry and removed from its mold, it is necessary to proceed with deburring.

This step involves removing excess material, burrs (overflow of material from the mold), and irregularities on a bronze piece after casting, known as "raw cast."

Deburring is performed using grinding wheels or files.

Thanks to a turning machine specialized in bronze work, our bronze artisans are able to manufacture cylindrical bronze pieces.

The turner works the bronze according to a process that generally consists of three steps:

  • Deburring of the pieces
  • Machining using lathes
  • Decorating the pieces through knurling operations.

Digital turning allows for series production with a better quality-to-price ratio.

The chasing on your bronzes can be reworked. This process adds more life and depth to your bronzes for a final result of exceptional quality.

Depending on the condition of the material, the workshop's bronze artisans adapt different techniques to meet your expectations:

  • Traced matte chasing, which is used to decorate flat bronze plates,
  • Repoussé chasing, which involves creating the relief of the design from the back of the piece,
  • Chasing on cast pieces

Polishing is an essential step for the final quality of the product; it determines the final appearance of the piece.

The dexterity of our polishers allows them to prepare the most complex surfaces (welded frames, crystal chandelier branches, galleries).

The roughness and defects of the pieces are "erased" through polishing using belts with increasingly fine grit until a brilliant, flawless surface is achieved.

Brightening adds shine to the pieces and removes the marks left by polishing pads.

Surface treatment provides protection and decoration for the metal.

  1. We perform chemical degreasing of the pieces through electrolysis to remove any remaining polishing paste.
  2. We pass the pieces through a degreasing bath to properly prepare them for better adhesion before applying the finish.
  3. Varnishing protects the pieces and their finish against external damage (hand perspiration, weather conditions, etc.). There are different types of varnishes, varying in durability and tinting properties, each with different characteristics. Our varnishes are applied manually in a dedicated space.

The Workshop offers custom bronze piece creation through its expertise in assembly.

Our artisans handle the shaping of bronze objects or foundry elements by assembling them according to a plan, drawing, or specifications.

The various bronze pieces are shaped through different techniques:

  • Tapping and threading of pieces
  • Welding of elements
  • Shaping and assembly of galleries, bands, moldings, and other pieces using a template
  • Final assembly of pieces
